"Cellular" division
Everywhere you look these days, people have cell phones
glued to their ears. It started, of course, with the
communications-crazy G-men. The phenomenon went
mainstream 20 years ago with Wall Street types, who needed
up-to-the second stock quotes, currency conversions and
arbitrage figures. It then graduated to doctors, lawyers and
rank-and-file businessmen.
But nowadays, almost everyone's got one, from middle-
schoolers on up. In 2001, 62% of American adults had a cell
phone. Today, that number is most likely over 7 out of 10.
Because they're no longer a fad, but rather an ever-growing
part of mainstream Americana, it's time we took a real close
look at cell phones from a health perspective. Irrespective of
the impact these devices have on highway mortality rates
from traffic accidents (we won't go into that, but it's
significant), there's mounting evidence suggesting that
cellular phones may not be perfectly safe for users.
This idea is nothing new - rumblings about cell-phone use
and brain cancer or tumors have been circulating in the
mainstream for years. But conflicting evidence and
inconclusive studies on the topic have relegated these to the
status of "urban legend" at best. Of course, cell phone makers
claim there is no scientific evidence of a connection between
cell phone use and health problems of any type.
However, some new European research shows a "substantive
link" between cell phone use and acoustic neuroma -
tumors of the auditory nerve that cause permanent nerve and
brain damage. According to a recent BBC news online report,
the study shows that use of cell phones for a decade or more
increases the likelihood of developing these tumors by nearly
4% on the side of the head habitually used for cell-phone
communication.
Couple that with a Finnish study from 2002 that linked
radiation of the type emitted by cell phones to "adverse
effects" on human brain tissue and you may have some cause
for concern, regardless of what the benevolent, unbiased cell
phone industry has to say. But I am skeptical. The
electronics industry has been hounded for years about their
evil rays, but it has mostly been just voodoo nonsense at
work.
Until all the research is in, I say it's better to be safe than
sorry - use your cell phones sparingly, or better yet, for
emergencies only. But there is a more important reason to
limit their use. You blabbers are driving us non-blabbers
crazy.

Barking up the cavalry
For as much as I've written lately about robots and
mechanical aids to living (Daily Dose, 5/4/2004 and
12/21/04), I still believe that animals are irreplaceable as
lifesaving companions - especially man's best friend.
Case in point
According to a recent MSNBC.com report, Faith, a 4-year
Rottweiler trained as a service animal saved a 45 year-old
seizure victim's life - by speed-dialing 911 and barking into
the phone when the woman fell from her wheelchair this past
September 7th!
Trained by canine experts at the Assistance Dog Club in
Puget Sound, the dog's sensitive nose detects minute changes
in her owner's body chemistry, alerting the woman to
impending seizures. The day of the fall, Faith had been onto
something, acting clingy and protective all day, according to
the article.
Ironically, it wasn't a seizure that caused the trouble, but a
long-term reaction to her seizure medications that caused the
Washington woman to collapse and need Faith's immediate
aid.
Figures that drugs were to blame, not the condition they were
supposed to be treating
